Micklethwait Barbecue, a favorite barbecue spot in Austin, has moved from its small trailer in Rosewood to a new brick-and-mortar location at 4602 Tanney St., in a rebuilt church in East Austin. The new location offers a new twist on the Micklethwait experience while keeping the classic Central Texas barbecue traditions.
Micklethwait said, "Enjoying barbecue is not just about the food; it's also about the atmosphere, the hospitality, and how you feel when you arrive." "We’ve worked hard to create a place that respects the history of barbecue while trying new things."
The new place has a bar where you can order food, beer, and wine. Inside, there are 1,200 square feet of space for 40 guests to sit. There’s also a large outdoor dining area with seating for 80 people under pecan trees, plus a patio where dogs are welcome. Three grills and a new direct-heat pit enable a broader menu featuring hand-cut chops, chicken al carbon, and pork steak cooked with mesquite wood.
The main menu still features classic oak-smoked beef, ribs, and sausage, as well as new side dishes like braised greens with bacon and roasted green bean salad. The baking program still makes homemade "Twinkies," buttermilk pie, and fresh bread.
Micklethwait is having a grand opening on February 1. The event will feature live music by DJ Fajita Flats, special food deals, and free beer from Meanwhile Brewing (while supplies last). It is free for everyone to attend.
The restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday, starting at 11 a.m. and staying open until it runs out of food. This gives barbecue fans a new place to visit in East Austin.
