Austin and San Antonio Named Among South’s Best Cities for 2025

Texas stands out in every way, including its notable presence on Southern Living’s 2025 list of the Best Cities in the South. This year, Austin and San Antonio both secured spots in the magazine’s top 20 cities, providing residents of the Lone Star State with even more reasons to take pride.

The yearly compilation, influenced by more than 10,000 contributions from readers, showcases the public's perspective on the finest destinations in the South for food, culture, shopping, and overall enjoyment. Readers noted that Austin and San Antonio were distinguished by their unique charm.

San Antonio achieved the top position at No. 12, recognized for its vibrant mix of historical significance and contemporary allure. Southern Living showcased renowned landmarks such as The Alamo and the River Walk while also urging travelers to venture beyond the typical tourist destinations. San Antonio Missions National Historic Park and The Witte Museum provide an enriching exploration of the city’s heritage. Local flavor truly stands out with beloved regional favorites such as puffy tacos from Ray’s Drive Inn.

Austin, recognized for its lively atmosphere and creative spirit, secured the 17th position. Southern Living characterized the city as “part college town, part big city,” praising its transformation into a destination that offers more than just barbecue. Austin boasts an impressive array of world-class cuisine, live music, picturesque swimming spots, and unique independent shops, all while continuing to evolve and maintain its vibrant creative essence.

Texas stood out as one of just four states featuring two cities in the rankings. Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida also featured prominently, with three cities each making the list. States such as Louisiana, Kentucky, and Maryland secured only one position each.
