Freeman F. Martin Sworn In as Texas Department of Public Safety Director

Freeman F. Martin was officially sworn in as the 14th Director of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) by Governor Greg Abbott in a ceremony held at DPS Headquarters in Austin. With over thirty years of experience in law enforcement, Martin assumes the leadership position committed to improving public safety throughout Texas.

“Freeman Martin brings an impressive depth of experience to this role,” said Governor Abbott. “His journey from trooper to Texas Ranger and then to Senior Deputy Director showcases his expertise and unwavering dedication to the rule of law, positioning him as the perfect leader for this exceptional agency.” Freeman will guarantee that Texas continues to uphold law and order, all while protecting the safety of its citizens.

Director Martin recognized Texas's difficulties, characterizing them among the most pressing public safety threats we face today. “My responsibility is to enhance safety in Texas and improve the department,” stated Martin. “With the skills we possess at every level, we will bring that to fruition.”

Martin’s career with DPS began in 1990 as a Highway Patrol trooper in Winnie. He has occupied various leadership positions, including Captain of the Texas Rangers and Deputy Director of Homeland Security Operations.

At the ceremony, Governor Abbott was accompanied by Public Safety Commission Chairman Steven Mach, former DPS Director Steve McCraw, and other law enforcement leaders. Martin’s appointment highlights Texas’ dedication to tackling emerging security challenges through established leadership.
