Authorities say that an intense explosion in northwest Austin on Sunday destroyed a house and hurt six people. The blast also damaged an elementary school nearby.
Just before noon, a blast caused an " unknown event " in the 10400 block of Double Spur Loop to cause a two-story home to fall down. In a news conference on Sunday afternoon, officials said it looked like an explosion tore the house down, but the cause is still being investigated.
According to Texas Gas Service, the home did not have access to natural gas. Crews were on the scene helping with the reaction.
Six people were hurt in the accident. One person was seriously injured but stable, and two others were severely hurt. Another person got hurt but chose not to go to the hospital. Two firemen were also slightly wounded while they were on the scene.
Laurel Mountain Elementary School, which is in the Round Rock Independent School District and is only a half-mile away, also suffered damage. The school district said several windows were broken in a classroom and the canteen, and the water and electricity in a portable classroom on campus were damaged.
The school will mostly be open on Monday, even though the damage has been done. Temporary fixes have been made, like putting plywood over broken windows to hide them. The school district said that families and workers affected by the incident will be able to get more help.
The Round Rock ISD said, "The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority."
The sudden and damaging explosion is still being looked into by investigators. The AFD told people in the area to report any problems or damage that was still there.
No new evacuations or public safety alerts had been sent out as of Monday morning.
