A swatting attack happened at the home of Austin Metcalf's father, Jeff Metcalf, on Thursday night. This happened just hours after a heated press meeting with Karmelo Anthony's family, who is accused of killing Austin.
Frisco Police confirmed that they reacted to a 911 call about gunshots at the Hickory Street home of the Metcalf family. After investigating, the call was found to be a hoax, commonly referred to as "swatting."
Swatting is the act of calling a fake emergency number to get a lot of cops involved, usually to bother or scare someone. In recent years, it has become more common, especially in cases that are public or have a lot of emotional content.
It happened soon after a tense news conference led by Dominique Alexander of the activist group Next Generation Action Network, who was speaking on behalf of Anthony's family. The event was planned because Anthony was criticized for being released from jail earlier this week after his bond was lowered from $1 million to $250,000.
Jeff Metcalf arrived at the press meeting on time, but he was asked to leave immediately. Alexander spoke first and said that Metcalf's appearance was wrong, calling it "a disrespect to the dignity of his son." Metcalf did not say anything in public because Dallas cops led him out of the area.
Austin Metcalf was stabbed by Karmelo Anthony on April 2 during a fight at a high school track meet. The event took place under a tent, and Metcalf died while his twin brother held him.
The police have not yet named a suspect in the hacking case, and the investigation is ongoing.
