Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan withdrew from the contest for re-election, suggesting a major political shift ahead of the 89th legislative session. Phelan will remain a Texas House representative after resigning.

Phelan, Speaker since 2021, saw his decision as an opportunity to unite lawmakers. “By stepping aside, I believe we create the best opportunity for our members to rally around a new candidate who will uphold the principles that make our House exceptional,” Phelan said.

His opposition to the school voucher proposal and his role in impeaching Attorney General Ken Paxton, whose Senate acquittal garnered national attention, have drawn him into conflict with Texas GOP leaders.

Political pressure on Phelan increased during a controversial primary runoff against rival David Covey, who received endorsements from President-elect Donald Trump and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick. Despite this, Phelan had his seat.

Phelan's recent addition of former Texas Governor Rick Perry to his advisory committee signaled he will run again. However, his absence suggests a strategic shift as the House prepares for the upcoming session.

Democratic House members said they prioritized public school financing, disaster pricing regulation, and reproductive rights for Texans. "With 40 days until the session, we prioritize Texans' issues," they stated. Phelan's resignation creates an opportunity for candidates to unite a fiercely polarized body. Maintaining integrity in a politically divided House will certainly characterize his Speakership.
