ICE Conducts Targeted Immigration Operations Across Austin, Other Major Cities

On Sunday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) carried out “enhanced targeted operations” in Austin, as part of a nationwide effort to enforce immigration laws and tackle public safety issues.

The operations, coordinated with federal agencies like the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), were conducted in cities such as San Antonio, Houston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, Buffalo, and Atlanta.

“[ICE], in collaboration with federal partners, initiated enhanced targeted operations today in Austin to enforce U.S. immigration law and ensure public safety,” stated Monica Yoas, acting media operations unit chief for ICE Southwest Region.

The announcement has raised apprehension within Austin’s immigrant community. City Council Member Vanessa Fuentes spoke on the matter, highlighting that numerous residents have voiced concerns regarding the operations.

“The community has been reassured by our local police that they will not enforce federal immigration laws,” Fuentes stated. “This is a significant point for the residents of Austin to understand.”

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin, expressed his disapproval of the operations, especially regarding the focus on law-abiding, tax-paying residents. “Dragnets aimed at targeting law-abiding residents ultimately undermine our economy and negatively impact families,” Doggett asserted.

Community advocates have expressed worries regarding the lasting impacts of these operations. There is a concern that such actions might discourage immigrants—whether documented or undocumented—from accessing essential services, reporting crimes, or interacting with local government.

In 2024, ICE documented 25,951 “removals” within the jurisdiction of the San Antonio office. The agency stated that its Enforcement and Removal Operations officers utilize “targeted, intelligence-driven tactics” in their missions.

Austin city leaders are set to convene on Tuesday to deliberate on the ramifications of recent federal immigration policies. At the same time, local representatives persist in their efforts to champion immigrant rights while backing initiatives aimed at enhancing community safety.
