Austin District 6 Councilwoman Mackenzie Kelly has filed an ethics complaint against her election opponent, Krista Laine, accusing Laine of failing to submit required financial records by the September 9 deadline. Laine has since stated the delay was due to a clerical error.

Mackenzie Kelly, a councilwoman from District 6, has submitted an ethics complaint against her opponent, Krista Laine. The complaint alleges that Laine neglected to submit the financial documents mandated by city and state law before the November election. The complaint results from Laine's failure to submit her financial statement by the September 9 deadline.

"Transparency is not optional — it's a cornerstone of ethical governance," according to Kelly. "When a candidate fails to file their financial disclosures, it raises serious concerns about potential conflicts of interest and a disregard for the rules we are all required to follow."

Kelly has urged the Austin Ethics Review Commission to take decisive action and hold Laine accountable for the purported oversight. "This is a call for accountability, regardless of whether one is a candidate." Kelly emphasized that the example set must be viewed by others.

Laine responded to the allegations by announcing that she had submitted her personal financial statement and that all remaining forms would be submitted soon. She clarified that the delay was the result of a clerical error, reaffirming her dedication to transparency and accountability throughout the campaign.

The Austin Ethics Review Commission is currently reviewing the ethics complaint, and it has the authority to impose fines or other penalties. Personal financial statements are essential for exposing a candidate's sources of income, debts, and financial interests, thereby promoting transparency in local governance.
