St. Patrick's Day in Austin is often accompanied by good spring weather, but over the years, there has been a great deal of variation in both temperatures and rainfall. Although the average high temperature is 74 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low temperature is 52 degrees Fahrenheit, the holiday's history has been molded by extreme weather occurrences.
There has never been a time when the temperature in Austin reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit on March 17. Still, in 1972, Camp Mabry recorded a sweltering 89 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the hottest St. Patrick's Day. A more recent example is 2018, when temperatures reached the middle of the 80s.
In contrast, the year 2000 retains the record for the coldest March 17 with a peak temperature of only 51 degrees Fahrenheit. On St. Patrick's Day, the only time that Austin experienced temperatures below freezing was in 1913, when the temperature dropped to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
Although March is Austin's sixth wettest month, with an average rainfall of 2.88 inches, St. Patrick's Day typically receives only 0.09 inches of precipitation. Nevertheless, the years 1941 and 1988 were exceptional since they each recorded about two inches of rainfall. Additionally, the years 1905 and 1992 each had more than one inch of precipitation.
It is difficult to anticipate the weather in Austin on St. Patrick's Day, whether it will be sunny, cool, or rainy. The Texans, on the other hand, will still find a way to rejoice, that much is clear.
