Families, students, and staff at Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders are in shock following Principal Nicole Griffith's resignation.

The email from Austin ISD on Thursday raised many questions about why a respected leader would resign with less than two months remaining in the school year.

The school district has stayed silent, providing no clarification regarding Griffith’s exit. A staff meeting occurred behind closed doors on Tuesday, with news outlets barred from entry, and the previously public Facebook livestream was switched to private.

Griffith, who has been at the helm of Ann Richards School since 2022, was recognized for her dedication to students and her efforts in promoting diversity initiatives. High school senior Sivarithi Kaapandiyan commended her leadership, highlighting her support for student organizations like the Asian Student Alliance and her efforts in revitalizing traditions such as Lunar New Year and Holi celebrations.

Her influence reached far beyond Ann Richards. Griffith dedicated almost twenty years to Austin ISD, having previously held the principal position at McCallum High School.

Lillian Gray, a former McCallum student, remembered Griffith as a supportive and fair leader, which makes her resignation even more perplexing.

Parents are feeling frustrated due to the insufficient communication from Austin ISD. Ted Hennessy, a parent of a middle school student, remarked that Griffith had previously referred to this position as her “dream job,” which makes her abrupt exit all the more puzzling. Faye Kolly, a concerned parent, highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability, stating, “It doesn’t make sense when a highly regarded, experienced educator just leaves without explanation.”

On Tuesday evening, parents convened at the South Austin campus, seeking clarity, yet departed without any answers. There were calls for Griffith’s potential reinstatement, provided no significant transgressions existed.

Dr. Catheryn Mitchell has taken on the role of interim principal, effective April 1. The district has not yet outlined a timeline for appointing a permanent replacement, but it has indicated that the search will commence later this spring.

Amidst the challenges faced by the school community, a singular question lingers without resolution: What prompted Nicole Griffith to resign?
