Thanksgiving Travel Rush Hits Austin Airport as Thousands Take to the Skies

During Thanksgiving week, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is experiencing significant travel activity, with approximately 30,000 passengers arriving and departing daily. Airport officials are increasing staffing levels and encouraging travellers to prepare in advance as they manage crowded terminals and ongoing construction.

“We consider this an all-hands-on-deck situation,” stated Lesly Ramirez, ABIA’s public information specialist. "Staff and administrative personnel are actively managing queues and assisting passengers in the terminal."

The holiday rush arrives alongside airport expansion initiatives that have resulted in the closure of the fourth TSA checkpoint. Ramirez stated that extra lanes have been introduced at various checkpoints to reduce delays. Nonetheless, lengthy queues persist, and authorities advise arriving two and a half hours before domestic and three hours for international flights.

Travellers picking up loved ones face added challenges due to traffic jams and full parking lots. “It was anticipated,” remarked Prashant Dewan, who came early to prevent any hold-ups. “The parking lot is quite congested.” Fortunately, We secured a place, but it’s all part of the holiday travel journey.

Airport officials recommend booking parking spaces ahead of time to prevent any last-minute complications.

Amid the turmoil, numerous passengers continue to exhibit a positive attitude. “Amidst the chaos and concern, happiness emerges when people reunite with their families,” remarked Dewan.

ABIA anticipates that travel volumes will stay elevated throughout the Thanksgiving weekend, and officials advise passengers to prepare for lengthy lines at TSA checkpoints and to bring their patience for the holiday surge.
