Texas Braces for Severe Weather: Gov. Abbott Declares State of Emergency

Governor Greg Abbott turned on state emergency response resources to guarantee readiness for possible calamities as Thursday's violent storms tore over Texas. Abbott instructed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to get state agencies ready for quick response when severe winds, hail, and tornado threats affected the Houston area and other portions of the state.

While the Texas Department of State Health Services was prepared to assist emergency operations, Texas A&M Task Force 1—a trained rescue team—was put on standby for water and land rescues. "Texas is ready to use all required resources to assist local officials in responding to severe weather threats," Abbott said, exhorting citizens and visitors to remain careful during holiday travel.

At least one confirmed tornado, maybe three, touched down under Wharton County officials' observation as a severe storm line swept through about 2 p.m. Luckily, as of mid-afternoon, no casualties were recorded. Until 7 p.m., the Houston area stayed under a Tornado Watch; citizens were encouraged to check weather reports regularly.

Emphasizing the need to create emergency preparations and follow local officials's advice, Abbott also complimented emergency responders for their commitment during the holiday week. Texans getting ready for more storms highlights how dedicated the state is to protecting its people during trying circumstances.
