Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory in Travis County has received a fine of $6,914 from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) due to two violations related to workplace safety. The penalties are connected to incidents of hazardous exposure and inadequate safety training for employees that occurred earlier this year.
The initial infraction pertained to Tesla not evaluating workers' exposure to chromium in the cybertruck body area during June. In July, the second violation was issued to the company for failing to provide sufficient training and information about hazardous chemicals. Following the informal settlements on October 31, each fine amounted to $3,457.
The OSHA inspection commenced on July 5 at the facility situated on Tesla Road and is still ongoing, as per federal records. Tesla has yet to provide a response to the requests for comment.
The Texas Gigafactory has faced OSHA scrutiny before. The death of a worker in August has led to an ongoing separate investigation. Inspections conducted in 2021 and 2022 revealed no violations; however, in late 2022, complaints regarding worker pay and training were submitted to the U.S. Labor Department.
Tesla's safety practices at the swiftly growing Gigafactory continue to attract the attention of regulators, particularly as the company increases production of its cybertruck.
