The incidence of road rage on city streets in Austin is rising in correlation with the city's population, resulting in a concerning trend of loss and violence. The Austin police have acknowledged that it is challenging to monitor these incidents in the absence of official crime reports. However, data indicates that there has been an increase in the number of incidents since 2019. KVUE analyzed the data and conducted interviews with families who were mourning the loss of loved ones due to road rage.

One such family is that of JR Lopez, who mourns his daughter, Miranda Lopez, on a daily basis. Miranda, who was fatally injured in a road rage incident on December 26, 2020, has been memorialized at JR's residence. "This is the final photograph that was captured that evening," JR stated, displaying her final photograph. Starting his day in her bedroom, he clings to her memory.

Miranda, 21, was traveling home with her sister when they honked at a motorist who was behaving erratically. Miranda's life was terminated when the driver pursued them and discharged shots. She had been employed at H-E-B and enrolled in Austin Community College with the intention of pursuing a degree in criminal justice at Texas State University.

A month prior, on November 25, 2020, a similar road rage incident resulted in the death of 20-year-old Omar Munguia. Omar's life was lost in a rollover crash that occurred after he pulled out in front of another motorist on Oltorf Street. The driver who followed him fired at him. "It is illogical," stated Ana De La Barreda, Omar's sister. She further emphasized the irregularity and irresponsibility of these encounters, stating, "It can happen to anyone."

The repercussions of road rage are not limited to statistics; they have a lasting impact on families such as Lopez's and De La Barreda's.
