Austin residents are being solicited to provide their opinions on the design of a new community plaza that may soon occupy a portion of Congress Avenue. City officials have suggested a series of enhancements along Congress Avenue, which extends from Cesar Chavez Street to 11th Street. These improvements include the potential creation of a plaza space north of Seventh Street.
The city aims to overhaul Congress Avenue between Riverside Drive and 11th Street as part of the Congress Avenue Urban Design Initiative, with a projected budget of $130 million. The city's 2020 Active Transportation and Safety Bond will finance the initial phase, which is anticipated to cost $22 million. The objective of the proposition is to preserve Congress Avenue's historic significance while simultaneously fostering a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
The initial phase is dedicated to the establishment of open spaces along Congress Avenue that are suitable for community activities, dining, retail, and walking. Nevertheless, the proposal would result in a reduction of 94 parking spaces out of the approximately 71,500 in the downtown area. The existing ADA-compliant parking spaces would either be retained or relocated to adjacent locations.
City officials are also considering bike lanes to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility. The proposed design is inspired by the Texas Capitol Mall and envisions a revitalized Congress Avenue as a lively gathering space that exemplifies Austin's distinctive culture.
The proposition is open for feedback from Austin residents until November 24. For additional information, there will be two public meetings: Tuesday, October 22, from 4-7 p.m., 506 Congress Ave., and on Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 506 Congress Ave.
More information and feedback options are available online, and a definitive plan is anticipated to be completed in early 2025.
