The redevelopment of the old Chalmers Courts public housing project in East Austin, which has reached its completion, has made over 400 additional units of affordable and market-rate housing available.
The recently renamed Pathways at Chalmers Courts is a big step forward in solving the city's housing requirements. This initiative is a component of a larger movement to improve East Austin's historic public housing buildings.
This movement includes the ongoing redevelopment of Rosewood Courts as well as the upcoming Santa Rita Courts project.
On October 4, representatives from the Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA), as well as local officials and residents, gathered to commemorate the successful completion of this revolutionary investment project, which cost $104.5 million. The Chalmers Courts were initially built during the New Deal in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and they were an important part of the process of delivering public housing to the East Austin population.
Early in the middle of the 2010s, HACA initiated the process of planning the renovation and expansion of Chalmers Courts, which ultimately led to the redevelopment of the original 156-unit complex that was located along Chalmers Avenue and Third Street.
HACA President and CEO Michael Gerber claimed that the organization has more than doubled the total number of units, which has made it feasible to shelter a greater number of Austin's families that are in the greatest need of housing. Residents will have a chance to enjoy beautiful and functional houses thanks to the newly constructed facilities, which feature energy-efficient appliances, central air conditioning, washer and dryer hookups, free internet access through Google Fiber, and a variety of other contemporary amenities.
