The University of Texas at Austin's women's football team achieved its first SEC championship in its inaugural season in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). This created a historic moment for the university's athletic program. The SEC Tournament final was played in Pensacola, Florida, on November 10, 2024, where the third-seeded Longhorns emerged victorious over the fourth-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks with a score of 1-0.
The first half of the match was characterized by strategic play and close defense, resulting in a scoreless draw. In the 79th minute, sophomore defender Carly Montgomery scored the game-winning goal by deflecting a precise corner kick from senior midfielder Lexi Missimo. This marked the turning point. The Longhorns and their supporters were able to celebrate after Montgomery's decisive header secured the victory.
In a dramatic semifinal match, Texas defeated No. 2 seed Arkansas 2-1 in double overtime, paving the way to the championship. Lauren Lapomarda, a fifth-year defender, scored the game-winning goal from 30 yards out, mere seconds before the match would have been forced to a penalty shootout.
Texas faced substantial challenges this season, such as Trinity Byars' knee injury in September, which resulted in her departure from the team. The Longhorns ' resilience and strong performances secured a 16-3-1 overall record (6-3-1 in the SEC) and the SEC's automatic bid to the NCAA women's soccer national tournament.
The tournament pairings will be announced on Monday at 3 p.m. CT.
