Texas Longhorns defensive back Jahdae Barron has been honored with the 2024 Jim Thorpe Award, recognizing him as the best defensive back in college football. The award, announced ahead of the College Football Playoff, is among the sport’s most prestigious honors for defensive players.

Barron is the third Longhorn to claim the award, following Michael Huff in 2005 and Aaron Ross in 2006. An Austin native from Connally High School, Barron was a cornerstone of Texas' elite defense, which led the nation in pass defense. His SEC-leading five interceptions this season earned him 65% of first-place votes from the Jim Thorpe Award National Selection Committee.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian praised Barron’s versatility and preparation, calling him “the most impactful player on that defense.” Alongside the Thorpe Award, Barron was a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and earned First Team All-SEC honors.

Barron’s future looks bright, with projections placing him as a top-three-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after he returns for another season with Texas. His performance has solidified his place as one of the best defensive backs in the nation, further elevating the Longhorns’ defensive legacy.
