According to an arrest document, an Austin woman accused of taking checks and mail valued more than $300,000 from more than 50 locations faces a first-degree felony charge.
Allegedly seen on security film grabbing mail from AC Auto Electric in North Austin and a nearby company, the woman was identified as Rasheika Brandyburg. "That's her taking my mail, and that's me running, chasing her," business owner Mohammad Medi Boozari told police after handing them the video. The episode has made Boozari think about adding locked mailboxes for extra security.
Brandyburg was found by police on North Lamar Boulevard, fitting the given description. She was discovered carrying two bags containing pilfered mail and a metal blade. Along with credit cards, personal Christmas cards, and bills, police said they also seized numerous checks totaling $300,000.
The affidavit showed that the pilfers contained mail from more than fifty different addresses. She also had seven credit cards, each belonging to a different person. Before being hauled into jail, the woman followed police orders to drop the blade and baggage.
Boozari raised worries about growing mail theft in the region while believing the culprit might be homeless. Police are looking into the pilfers of mail and checks still.
Mail theft charges Brandyburg has been accused of have been escalated to a first-degree felony because of the volume of addresses implicated. This story emphasizes the need for alertness among companies and people as well as possible preventive actions such as locked mailboxes.
