Last Day to Register: Here's What's at Stake in the Nov. 4 Texas Election

On November 4, Texans will have the opportunity to influence state and local policies by voting on 17 proposed constitutional amendments, as well as various local elections.

The statewide propositions feature significant property tax reductions for both homeowners and businesses, making them one of the most scrutinized measures on the ballot. Additional changes focus on areas such as infrastructure, education funding, and issues related to the cost of living.

Alongside the state amendments, several local governments are scheduled to hold special elections. Notable events include a special election for Texas’ 18th Congressional District and Houston City Council’s At-Large Position Four in Harris County; three races for the Houston ISD school board; a bond election for Richardson ISD in Dallas County; multiple bond propositions for North East ISD in Bexar County; and a proposal for a tax rate increase for the City of Austin in Travis County.

Citizens are encouraged to check their county election websites to verify the local measures that will be on their ballots.

The 17 constitutional amendments will be prominently featured at the top of every Texas ballot. The Texas Secretary of State's Office confirms that the implementation of these statewide propositions requires the approval of a majority of voters. 

Important election deadlines are approaching. Today, Monday, Oct. 6, marks the final opportunity to register to vote or update your address or name for the upcoming general election. Early voting is scheduled to begin on October 20 and will continue through November 1.

Residents of Texas who have relocated or altered their name since the previous election can conveniently update their registration via the Secretary of State’s website. Voters can verify their registration status by logging in through one of three methods: using their Texas driver’s license number along with their date of birth, entering their full name, date of birth, and county of residence, or utilizing the Voter Unique Identifier found on their voter registration certificate.

Election officials are encouraging residents to verify their registration ahead of time and to carefully review local ballot items before heading to the polls.
