Austin's well-known taco truck, Con Todo, is shutting down because chef Joseph Gomez is leaving the business. Gomez posted the news on Instagram and said that he had to make this hard choice because of his family.
"It's not over yet. "Not at all," Gomez wrote. "As always, I'm fully committed to fighting for the rights of migrant workers, and I'll do that through new projects as well."
Since it opened, Con Todo has been an important part of Austin's food scene. It serves "border town" food that comes from the Rio Grande Valley. The truck got a lot of praise for its goal, which was to start a conversation about the differences between Tex-Mex and South Texas Mexican food. It won the Best New Food Truck award from Eater Austin in 2022 and was also named to Eater's national list of Best New Restaurants. Last year, it even got a Michelin suggestion at Texas's first Michelin Guide ceremony.
Gomez, who was in the running for the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Texas, gave hints about what he might do next. Fans can look forward to seeing his tacos at pop-ups and special events, along with other projects that keep people talking and making people hungry.
Gomez wrote, "Sometimes we have to close one door to open another." "I'm excited to find out what the future holds, even though we don't always know it."
The closing of Con Todo is the end of an era for Austin's food scene. However, Gomez's next project looks like it will continue to be an important part of his cooking journey.
