AUSTIN, TX- Austin Water presented its conservation and drought contingency plans to city authorities days after Texas agriculture officials warned of an imminent water shortage. Nevertheless, the proposals have been criticised, with some advocating for more substantial investments in water conservation.

Sarah Faust, a member of Austin's Integrated Water Resource Planning Committee Task Force, stated, "I do not believe the plans accurately reflect the potential of substantial investment." Bill Bunch, an environmental advocate from the Save Our Springs Alliance, advocated for more robust action, including acquiring water pumping rights into the Barton Springs catchment and protecting additional land. Austin Water and Austin Energy presented their plans at the meeting on Tuesday; however, the proposals failed to address numerous inquiries.

Emily Rafferty, a member of the Task Force, raised concerns regarding the significance of conservation in protecting Austin's future water supply. Others, such as Madeline Mathis, contended that the plans lacked incentives to motivate behavioural changes in favour of conservation.Roy Waley encouraged the city to establish the Purple Pipe Program as a necessity rather than an option, thereby fortifying it. The program promotes using reclaimed water for non-potable applications, such as irrigation. Kevin Kluge, Austin Water's water Conservation Manager, recommended incentives for residents to install water-efficient fixtures and drip irrigation.

During a senate committee meeting last week, State Senator Charles Perry criticized conservation efforts in Texas, declaring them inadequate, as the state deals with water shortages. Austin's leaders continue to prioritize the identification of optimal solutions for those they serve, regardless of the opposition.
