Austin ultra runner and military veteran Matthew Johnson began his "Run Across Texas" on October 1, an 850-mile journey from El Paso to Galveston. Johnson is running to raise funds for ValorFit, a nonprofit that helps veterans integrate into fitness communities.
“October is about one mission—to get across Texas,” Johnson said before starting. His journey will help bring attention to ValorFit, which connects veterans with fitness programs and group workouts. "Fitness changed my life, and now I want to use this platform to do some good,” he added.
Though Johnson is no stranger to long-distance running, he acknowledged that this trek will be one of his most brutal. Averaging between 40 to 50 miles per day, Johnson aims to complete the journey in 17 to 21 days.
“I’m excited to see the impact this has—especially the people who come out to run with me or cheer me on,” Johnson said. He’ll be supported along the route by his team, traveling in an RV and van to monitor his progress.
With every mile, Johnson hopes to inspire others while also highlighting the importance of mental and physical health for veterans. The funds raised will go towards helping more veterans find support through fitness.
