Each year, numerous Texas families endure agony as a result of drunk driving incidents, with the holiday season intensifying the problem. Intoxicated drivers account for one in four traffic fatalities statewide each year, a statistic that rises to 28% over the holiday season.

In response to this concerning trend, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is initiating a campaign to promote safe driving practices. TxDOT’s mobile interactive exhibit will educate Walmart consumers of the lethal repercussions of drinking and driving while they purchase beverages for holiday celebrations.

“Drinking and driving is unacceptable,” stated TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “Experiencing the loss of a loved one due to a drunk driver is a tragedy that no family should have to face.” Reliable and sober transportation options are consistently accessible, and it is imperative to prioritize them.

The initiative follows the catastrophic figures from the previous year: During Thanksgiving and the Christmas season, 126 fatalities and 272 severe injuries resulted from intoxicated driving.

A TxDOT poll indicates that the majority of individuals who acknowledge driving post-consumption frequently do so after departing from a friend's residence. By engaging individuals during their holiday shopping, TxDOT aims to emphasize the significance of making safer decisions.

This holiday season, the directive is unequivocal: strategize in advance, select a sober mode of transportation, and contribute to the prevention of unnecessary tragedy on Texas roadways.
