During a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) operation, federal and local law enforcement officials conducted a raid on a property in Harris County that was connected to Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the suspect who was responsible for the New Orleans New Year's terror attack that resulted in 15 fatalities and over 35 injuries.
On Thursday, individuals from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Harris County Sheriff's Office worked together to build a protective perimeter in the vicinity of Hugh Road and Crescent Peak Drive in the northern part of Harris County. The property was reportedly entered by SWAT forces, according to witnesses. An individual who emerged from Jabbar's residence with his hands raised was taken into custody by the authorities after they had retrieved at least four children and five adults from a property in the vicinity. The arrest was carried out without any complications.
Identified as the driver who crashed a leased pickup truck into crowds on Bourbon Street, Jabbar, a 42-year-old veteran of the United States Army, is the owner of the property to which the vehicle is registered. Using recordings that Jabbar made before the attack, the FBI has established a connection between Jabbar and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
As part of their investigation, police are examining his activities at home and online in order to learn more about his radicalization and the factors that led to it.
In addition, the authorities are looking into whether or if other people were aware of Jabbar's plans or participated in them.
In light of the fact that communities in Texas and Louisiana are still struggling to come to terms with the consequences of this horrific tragedy, this operation represents an important development in the investigation.
