The death of Jimmy Carter, aged 100, sparked thoughts on his life and achievements, notably his singular political triumph in Texas.

Carter became the last Democratic presidential contender to win a state in 1976. This accomplishment still stands unmatched almost 50 years later. The political terrain of the 1970s much influenced Carter's triumph.

Director of the LBJ Presidential Library, Mark Lawrence, said of Texas as a state experiencing political change. "The 1976 election was part of a gradual shift," Lawrence said, citing Carter's popularity as a white Southerner who connected with voters in the area.

Professor of political science Natasha Altema McNeely of UT-Rio Grande Valley pointed out Carter's ability to unite Black, Hispanic, and union voters in Texas. "His popularity in Texas reflected his more general appeal throughout the South," McNeely added.

Carter's political popularity in Texas, meanwhile, declined during his presidency. Reflecting a more significant turn toward Republican dominance in the South, Ronald Reagan clearly beat him in the state by 1980. Essential elements noted by McNeely were Reagan's emphasis on religious values, smaller government, and states' rights, as well as the Iranian hostage situation.

In Texas, Carter left more than just a political impact. Working with Habitat for Humanity, he built houses following storms and other tragedies for decades. 2014 saw him assist in building and fixing Dallas homes."Carter's post-presidency work perfectly captures his ongoing influence," McNeely stated. "

His humanitarian activities, especially in Texas, remain an important part of his legacy.”
